Taking the Long View
After reading this article ... well, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, "Sure, most people say he's unsuccessful now, but history may judge him differently. Look at Richard Nixon."
Yes, let's look at Richard Nixon. Actually, let's look away from Richard Nixon, because that's just too scary to contemplate. Nixon is one of the scariest presidents we've had. Paranoid, power-hungry, struggling to extricate us from a nasty war, conservative, cranky, played hardball against his enemies ... what was that about Bush again?
"Yes," you may say, "but Nixon went to China!" And Bush can't even find China on a map.
But perhaps we shouldn't judge Bush on his failures. We should judge him on his successes. Conservative media outlets are quick to point out plenty of those. For one thing, he got the Taliban out of Afghanistan, except for the ones who are still killing American troops, but there's far fewer Taliban now, so it's all good unless one of those troops is your child. And Bush got Moammar Khadafy to say he'll never never never build nuclear weapons, cross his heart and hope to die, and we trust him because he really, really meant it this time. (As Bush might say, "I know his heart.")
And, of course, he got Saddam Hussein out of Iraq. And everything's gonna be hunky-dory there anytime now.
But why judge Bush too harshly? After all, he's only human. Who among us has not completely fucked up the country at one time or another? Like the bible says, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." So Bush cast that motherfucker.

This "food for thought" deserves comment. Dick Nixon WAS smart. He was also very scary. We should not really get romantic about him or his legacy. We can remember his good deeds; but not without remembering the wicked intent of his follies.
As for President Bush, he has become a whipping boy. We are quick to forget that during times of War; ALL AMERICAN PRESIDENTS were guilty of secrecy. We really do not know too much about what our beloved Icons, FDR & Harry T had ordered on covert level. We still don't discuss those Japanese Internment camps alot.
I would challenge somebody to write a really good book, gaining more access to FOI & relate more of the "stuff" that Franklin & Harry did behind our back. I wonder if Bush would look so evil?
I don't envy our President. We assume he is an arrogant SOB, yet we assumed that about LBJ, only to hear some heartfelt tapes, during which the Viet Nam war brought this coarse, hard charactor to tears! He was more compassionate about the fall-out of war on those young Vets, than Nixon, it seems, based on the tapes out there. Dick Nixon could be very hard & cold. I have heard, tho, that Nixon was very good to his staffers, especially the "little people".
Someday in history, we might read an amazing acct. of Bush & we will be very surprised (if we are here); at how poorly we judged him.
Personally, I don't feel I have all the facts to judge him. Unlike Viet-Nam, I remember the day that these troubled MidEasterns came to visit NYC & the Pentagan. I don't recall our enemies in N. Vietnam being quite so virulent & hateful in their remarks about us.
It seems to me, the Mideast really does hate us. I happen to think we are in danger of another visit. I think of the Muslim exodos to Europe and the problems Euro Society has in matriculting them. In Euro cities the Muslims are busy organizing themselves into very active blocks.
I also feel the Muslims are very different. I don't feel I can reconstruct the Koran to fit my values, as much as I would like to. I am also one of those who feel Iraq would have become a Grand Central Station for MidEast Terrorists.
I am very concerned, tho about this Blackwater group of mercenaries and the other private contracts our govt. has meted out. This could reshape my opinon profoundly. If I had reason to feel this Admin. was directly involved in compromising our soldiers for Pork. I don't like the way the VA was operating their hospitals for our men in combat. Katrina was a deplorable situation!
So, I am more conservative than most of you, but I do share your concerns about the way we are going about our business.
